Cable, I Quit You

Would you go without TV? I find that when I am active and busy I can easily go without it, and in Maui we didn’t turn the TV on the whole week – it was so refreshing! But, I do love a good series…I can definitely binge-watch like a champ (see: New Girl, True Detective, Breaking Bad).

That said, we’ve talked about getting rid of cable (and just using Netflix) a few times to see how it might affect our daily routine, but it didn’t really make sense since we live in a high rise and get cable + HBO for basically nothing. However, our price recently went up, so we took the plunge and said adios!  We still have AppleTV and Netflix, plus we’ll get basic channels, so obviously we’ll still watch TV, but I think it is a step in the right direction, for us at least, in that we’ll have less mindless TV watching. Instead of just turning on the TV when we get home from work, my hope is that we’ll use that time to make dinner, go on a walk, read a book, talk, play a game, whatever! After this super long winter, I don’t think that’ll be a challenge once it warms up.

Tell me – would you give up TV/cable?

I like to think I could do without…I rely on it too much for background noise. Think it’s really admirable that you’re looking to connect with one another instead if with yet more technology!!

I did it for one year before we moved in together, and relied only on the internet TV and local stations. I thought it was great. I wasn’t just throwing on the TV on a random Tuesday night for lack of something better to do. I would spend more time reading, cooking, biking or smoking cigars when the weather was nicer. It’s funny how subtly the TV can suck valuable time without you even realizing it. I’m pretty excited that we’re getting rid of that stuff. I assume this means we’ll also be watching less E-News, which really makes me happy.
